Panama
The Panamanian Federation of American Football (PFAF) currently offers flag football and contact football leagues for ages 8 and older. The federation became a member of PAFAF (Pan American Federation of American Football) in 2007.
Panama's plan for growth includes the construction of a 5,000-seat football-only stadium in Panama City that will serve as the home base for the federation and has the potential to become a center for regional PAFAF competitions, clinics and training.
Panama’s junior (under 19) team defeated the Bahamas in a qualifying game for the 2009 IFAF Junior World Championship in January 2009, but suffered a loss to PAFAF neighbor Mexico in the final qualifier.
Panama might not immediately be considered an American football hotbed, but the Central American country boasts a three-year NFL offensive lineman in Frank Davis of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Davis came to prominence in 2000 when he represented Panama at the NFL Global Junior Championship in Atlanta and stood out despite his team suffering defeats to Europe and the United States. Davis went on to play at the University of South Florida where he was a second team All-Big East selection after starting all 12 games as a senior for the Bulls. Davis became the first Panamanian to start in the NFL when he lined up for the Detroit Lions in 2006 and opened the 2008 season on the Bengals roster.
In 2007 Panama again competed at the NFL GJC and lost to both the United States and Mexico in a tough group stage, but then scored the first ever points of international competition and an historic first victory. Panama beat France 14-6 to claim fifth place in the tournament as two Panamanian players were named to the all-tournament team.
